We already know the winners of 3rd Young Social Entrepeneurs Awards

We were talking in this blog, not so many time ago, about the importance of social compromise. Because of that, we invited you to participate in the third edition of “Social Enterpreneurs Awards”. From that moment until now people were sending their works and initiatives. All of them are about different topics but with a common place in the net that works as a meeting point.

We already know who the winners of this edition are. This year's winning initiatives have touched many aspects of our society, from sports to social integration, through examples of improvement.

Maria Jose Garcia Santacruz , for example, has been awarded for her “Proyecto Nido” that works on the education process of young gipsy people from Rumania. Those people are in a hard situation in settlement Gallinero and Cañada Real Galiana. “Proyecto Nido” helps those people through many different activities.

Other winning initiatives have focused on social integration as the most important thing. Estefanía Rodero Sanz is the leader of “Mundo Catarata” which helps people with the reintegration into society through the literature. Elia González Reina represents “Entrepuentes Association” and has created a meeting point for immigrant people.

Supportive sport has been also awarded in the third edition of “Social Enterpreneurs Awards”. Inspira Sports is a company that wants to support NGO’s, government and Spanish public and private institutions to create developing initiatives through sports.

Estefanía Calero presented “Los Veteranos”, a project based on the experience of young people cancer survivors. Is, without doubts, a great example for the society.

Finally we don’t want to forget other winner initiatives like Actuable that is working on social activism.

As you can appreciate there are a lot of people who is working hard to build a better world. There are a lot of reasons to keep dreaming on a better life.

Facebook and "The social Network"

When Mark Zuckerberg came up with the idea of creating an internet platform, with photos and information about his classmates from university, he never imagined that it was the beginning of one of the most important social phenomenon: Facebook.

The success of Facebook was so obvious that it even became the best social network. Facebook is composed by over 500 million members and offers a great variety of around 70 languages. Mark Zuckerberg with just 26 years old, has become one of the most important and influential person in the world. He has a great fortune. Great ideas begin with small steps, ¿do you really know what small steps have been taken in Facebook?

Not everything has been good in this story. "The social Network" film says that "You don't get to 500 milion friends without making a few enenmies". Actually that's how everything begins in Harvard University.

Mark used the algorithm of his friend Eduardo Saverin to create "FaceMash", the site where university students could chose the most beatiful girl inside the campus. Shorly after he was inspired by "Havard Connection" a similar idea to Facebook that was thought by twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoos and Divya Narendra.

Just like that Facebook born. A conglomerate of ideas that Mark took from his friends and made it real. The succes was rising so fast, also the problems. Mark was accused for codes conduct violation and intellectual property theft. The friends felt that Mark was making his own business.

"The social Network" was released past october 15th. Film is about the beginning of Facebok and the founders. It was directed by David Fincher. As Facebook website, the film was a total success.

Universidad Europea de Madrid has a Facebook profile because is one more communication channel with quality and useful for you. If you are not a fan yet we invite you to join in. Moreover you can invite your friends through this tab "Invite your friends"

You can write a comment about the film on the wall if you have seen it.

Nelson Mandela, named Honoris Causa by Universidad Europea de Madrid

Last Friday Nelson Mandela was named Doctor Honoris Causa by Universidad Europea de Madrid, and other five Universities, which are part of the Laureate International network:  University Andrés Bello (Chile), Walden University in Baltimore (USA), University of Applied Sciences (Peru), Bilgi University (Istanbul) and  University of the Americas (Ecuador).

All we have clear that the role of Nelson Mandela in history is indisputable. He became the first democratically elected president in his country, South Africa, and before that he spent 27 years in prison. This years in Robben Island  made him one of the most representative person in the war against the apartheid. He was the person who convinced his people to lay down the arms and fight for their beliefs peacefully. I like to think that with this designation a small part of that history, will also be part of UEM.

Mandela could not attend in person to be named Honoris Causa. In his representation the event was attended by South African Ambassador to Spain, Vusi Koloane Bruce, accompanied by Sathyandranath Ragunanan "Mac" Maharaj, minister and political activist who was imprisoned with Nelson Mandela on Robben Island. The words of the British journalist and writer, John Carlin, described Mandela as an accesible man, compassionate, a great strategist, with great leadership skills. Carlin spoke about Mandela, who tries to put himself to the same level of his interlocutor, even if he is sepaking with a President or a person who works for him.

After the event I asked myself what Mandela would have told students if he had been there. Surely, he would have spoken of the importance of education, not only in terms of training, pass exams and pass courses. Education as a synonymous principles like equality, respect and democracy. I also thought that he would appreciate the international character of Universidad Euopea de Madrid, knowing that it is a fundamental value in our current society.

It is always important to have people who guide us, and I think that students, teachers and members of the Universidad Europea de Madrid will be inspired by this appointment and especially the life of this great politician and statesman.

European Professional Translation Classroom

At UEM we take very seriously that languages bring the world together and especially professionals. Faculty of Arts and Communication has started  various initiatives for professionals and senior students in degrees related to the field of Translation and Interpreting.

Last summer, we launched China for professionals. A tool divide in two parts: a glossary of 60 basic phrases and a brief introduction to Chinese culture which try  to help people whose for working reason are closer to this country.

Journalists can also participate in the European Journalism Classroom. New technologies and emerging media make necceesary  continuous training  for professionals in this field.

Communication College  also currently offers a course in Introduction to Spanish teaching (also called ELE). In collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes, the course is for people who have good knowledge of the Spanish language, but do not have a specific training in teaching ELE.

Finally we should  distinguish European Professional Translation Classroom. Under this name they organized periodically focused workshops to professionals who are interested in updating or expanding their knowledge. Since last September there have been workshops about audiovisual translation or targeted to the field of finance and economics. This Friday (February 12) will be a new edition on audiovisual translation of Japanese animation. This workshop will be taught by Alessandra Moura (translator of some of the most important animes of recent years). To attend this course need to fill out the registration form and make the payment of fees (30 € which includes course materials and lunch at noon). You can consult here the program.

Do you have TALENTUM?

This week you have an appointment with the V Human Resources Seminar “TALENTUM”. This edition will be focus on Innovative Trends in Managing People.

Every week you have at UEM a lot of activities to choose but not too much time (at least in these days) Sometimes it's hard to decide to attend one event or another (or none).

I could give you several reasons to attend this seminar, but I think it best to give you one clear and strong: this type of knowledge will help you when you attend your first work interview.

Many of you'll be thinking that Human Resources has nothing to do with what you are studying, but soon you'll be immersed in different selection processes in companies, and maybe later it would be you the person in charge to decide l who is part of your team. You can learn about the experience of prestigious professionals from important companies as Campofrío, Cadena Ser, Renault, or Metro de Madrid.

Thaksgiving at UEM

Universidad Europea de Madrid is an institution with a high number of international studentes, so it’s normal that our traditions and manners are mixed with those from our classmates and friends. Thanksgiving is a one of the most traditional Holidays in US and Canada. This celebration manages to reunite families and friends the third Thursday of each November. Along with the 4th of July, it's the most popular non-religious festivity.

In Spain, we don’t celebrate this Holiday, but it’s true that eveybody know how is its celebration: the traditional supper with turkey, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and watching American Football games.

To understand how deep-rooted is this Holiday in the american culture, we have to know its origins: the first Thanksgiving Day was in 1621 when the pilgrims, grateful for the good harvest of that year, invited to the American Indians who helped them to survive this difficult year. Thanksgiving was officially proclaimed by President Lincoln in 1863.

UEMLab as in other years, has brought us a little part of this celebration with two activities.

- THANKSGIVING: What's it all about?: a class in which they explained to us what it was and how they live this day in U.S.

- PIE TASTING THANKSGIVING FEAST, a contest in which each participant had to bring their best pie and await the verdict of the guests who taste the pies at the basement of Building A

Learning with a Premio Planeta

As I said before, my job as Community Manager at the Universidad Europea de Madrid is giving me the opportunity to participate in meetings, talks and conferences with professionals in the field of advertising, medicine, law or journalism who are a reference within and outside the University.

Last week I attended the presentation of the Faculty of Communication of the Carmen Posadas’ Chair in creative writing. What most impressed me about the autor, whose work has been described as one of the best in Latinamerica, was the and simplicity that her manner and his speech made clear in the way she spoke twith the students and the faculty.

Carmen Posadas won the Premio Planeta in 1998 with Pequeñas Infamias, besides since then she has been having success after successl with books like La Bella Otero or a compilation of articles called La hernia de Viriato: Recetario para hipocondríacos. Also she collaborates with UEM as a member of its Advisory Board. Carmen gives now another step in her relationship with the university and students to get involved organazing this new Chair. She and the writer Ramon Buenaventura told us, that this chair is designed for students of the Faculty of Communication and for those with a writting vocation. Ramon asked some questions to Carmen, with hger answers we learned more about her training as a writer and all experiences that have influenced on hers creation. To the eternal question of whether the writer born or made. Against to the opinion of most writers she believes, that althouhg the talent is innate, the authors can be educated and trained not only in their writing skills but also in how they read It is the not same to approach a book as a common reader as a future novelist.

The Chair, for those who are interested (I imagine you will be many) will be divided into two parts. A first in which reading skills will be treated with techniques as the "vampirizing reading" in which the future writers will learn how to identify these structures and elements that will help them to compose their own work. And a second part that will go deeper into the techniques of creative writing with which students will build their own portfolios.

See you at the library!
