European Professional Translation Classroom

At UEM we take very seriously that languages bring the world together and especially professionals. Faculty of Arts and Communication has started  various initiatives for professionals and senior students in degrees related to the field of Translation and Interpreting.

Last summer, we launched China for professionals. A tool divide in two parts: a glossary of 60 basic phrases and a brief introduction to Chinese culture which try  to help people whose for working reason are closer to this country.

Journalists can also participate in the European Journalism Classroom. New technologies and emerging media make necceesary  continuous training  for professionals in this field.

Communication College  also currently offers a course in Introduction to Spanish teaching (also called ELE). In collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes, the course is for people who have good knowledge of the Spanish language, but do not have a specific training in teaching ELE.

Finally we should  distinguish European Professional Translation Classroom. Under this name they organized periodically focused workshops to professionals who are interested in updating or expanding their knowledge. Since last September there have been workshops about audiovisual translation or targeted to the field of finance and economics. This Friday (February 12) will be a new edition on audiovisual translation of Japanese animation. This workshop will be taught by Alessandra Moura (translator of some of the most important animes of recent years). To attend this course need to fill out the registration form and make the payment of fees (30 € which includes course materials and lunch at noon). You can consult here the program.

Do you have TALENTUM?

This week you have an appointment with the V Human Resources Seminar “TALENTUM”. This edition will be focus on Innovative Trends in Managing People.

Every week you have at UEM a lot of activities to choose but not too much time (at least in these days) Sometimes it's hard to decide to attend one event or another (or none).

I could give you several reasons to attend this seminar, but I think it best to give you one clear and strong: this type of knowledge will help you when you attend your first work interview.

Many of you'll be thinking that Human Resources has nothing to do with what you are studying, but soon you'll be immersed in different selection processes in companies, and maybe later it would be you the person in charge to decide l who is part of your team. You can learn about the experience of prestigious professionals from important companies as Campofrío, Cadena Ser, Renault, or Metro de Madrid.

Thaksgiving at UEM

Universidad Europea de Madrid is an institution with a high number of international studentes, so it’s normal that our traditions and manners are mixed with those from our classmates and friends. Thanksgiving is a one of the most traditional Holidays in US and Canada. This celebration manages to reunite families and friends the third Thursday of each November. Along with the 4th of July, it's the most popular non-religious festivity.

In Spain, we don’t celebrate this Holiday, but it’s true that eveybody know how is its celebration: the traditional supper with turkey, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and watching American Football games.

To understand how deep-rooted is this Holiday in the american culture, we have to know its origins: the first Thanksgiving Day was in 1621 when the pilgrims, grateful for the good harvest of that year, invited to the American Indians who helped them to survive this difficult year. Thanksgiving was officially proclaimed by President Lincoln in 1863.

UEMLab as in other years, has brought us a little part of this celebration with two activities.

- THANKSGIVING: What's it all about?: a class in which they explained to us what it was and how they live this day in U.S.

- PIE TASTING THANKSGIVING FEAST, a contest in which each participant had to bring their best pie and await the verdict of the guests who taste the pies at the basement of Building A

Learning with a Premio Planeta

As I said before, my job as Community Manager at the Universidad Europea de Madrid is giving me the opportunity to participate in meetings, talks and conferences with professionals in the field of advertising, medicine, law or journalism who are a reference within and outside the University.

Last week I attended the presentation of the Faculty of Communication of the Carmen Posadas’ Chair in creative writing. What most impressed me about the autor, whose work has been described as one of the best in Latinamerica, was the and simplicity that her manner and his speech made clear in the way she spoke twith the students and the faculty.

Carmen Posadas won the Premio Planeta in 1998 with Pequeñas Infamias, besides since then she has been having success after successl with books like La Bella Otero or a compilation of articles called La hernia de Viriato: Recetario para hipocondríacos. Also she collaborates with UEM as a member of its Advisory Board. Carmen gives now another step in her relationship with the university and students to get involved organazing this new Chair. She and the writer Ramon Buenaventura told us, that this chair is designed for students of the Faculty of Communication and for those with a writting vocation. Ramon asked some questions to Carmen, with hger answers we learned more about her training as a writer and all experiences that have influenced on hers creation. To the eternal question of whether the writer born or made. Against to the opinion of most writers she believes, that althouhg the talent is innate, the authors can be educated and trained not only in their writing skills but also in how they read It is the not same to approach a book as a common reader as a future novelist.

The Chair, for those who are interested (I imagine you will be many) will be divided into two parts. A first in which reading skills will be treated with techniques as the "vampirizing reading" in which the future writers will learn how to identify these structures and elements that will help them to compose their own work. And a second part that will go deeper into the techniques of creative writing with which students will build their own portfolios.

See you at the library!

Bassat and the new generation of publicists

Since I am the Community Manager of UEM, I've been lucky to meet on several occasions with Mr. Luis Bassat.

I doubt that he could be a stranger for you, but just in case I will make a brief introduction: for those who have studied something related to the advertising field, it is clear that all we know about this field is marked with the seal Bassat . Besides being the Honorary President and Founder of Grupo Bassat Ogilvy and Doctor Honoris Causa by the Universidad Europea de Madrid, was the creator of the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games of Barcelona '92

Among many other things is well recognized within the advertising industry for his books, I recommend one of his them that have helped me to understand better the process of creation within the world of creativity: El libro rojo de la Publicidad.

And while he is not anymore working in an agency, Bassat remains an active element in this scene. For example he has even been selected by a national nerwork to present the Spanish version of "The Apprentice".

Last week Bassat presented his Chair, named "100% Creativity / Creativity 360". Thhe course will have a duration of 9 months, and is designed to students that are currently studying in the School of Communication. The purpose of this course is to demonstrate that creativity can be learned. The student will learn the ways that help make a good idea, the best idea possible to meet the expectations and objectives of the client.

I have the intention to attend to one of these lectures, and I'll tell you everything that happens in there.

The "know-how" of the Medical students I

Since last year our university has a new degree in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Our academic offer has been increased with a Degree in Medicine. This is not just the answer to the a job market that needs to incorporate more health professionals, but also we want to make a diference with the integral development of our students.

We believe that to be a good Doctor requires more that to have the knowledge to make a correct diagnosis and to practice a successful surgery. We believe that future M.Ds must improve their communication skills with patients and their enviroment, besides the research has to became a key part of his career. They have to integrated new technologies into their methodology of work and study and be more aware of the economic expensives related with their medical decisions.

Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the Universidad Europea de Madrid, Dr. Carlos Lumbreras, believes that a well-trained doctor is one who, in addition to having the skills and knowledge necessary to understand that his/her profession is healing and relieve human beings, can never lose the curiosity to know more, and cultivate a critical spirit that characterizes the best science.

Since its beggining the degree is fully integrated into the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). It means that our students can develop their careers at international level, their degree will be fully recognized. But also the will study new subjects, such as Bioethics and Primary Care, that have been neglected for a long time in formal education. Alumns who decide to study with us, will have the opportunity to practice, whether in our Simulated Hospital, in PHC centers and University Hospitals.

Do you want to study abroad?

If the answer is yes, this is your lucky day because UEM helps you to come your wishes true. There are several programs for UEM students. For example, if you study in a different university and you would like to study just for some months or a year in our university, you can do it with an Erasmus program. However, if you already study in UEM, you can benefit from other kind of agreements.

One of them is the bilateral agreement between UEM and different English and American universities. The students of this program will feel the experience of study in some of the best Anglo-Saxon universities around the world.

Another possibility is to study part of your degree in one of the Laureate International Universities centers across Europe, America, Asia and Oceania.

The answer of people who had studied abroad is always the same: they affirm it was a great professional and academic experience. They also say that thanks to this experience they have more benefits in order to find a job. For these reason, we encourage you to apply one of these programs.

If you want to know more about the universities which take part of these programs, the countries where the centers are, and the necessary requirements to apply them, visit the following link:
