    Friday Afternoon

    It's Friday afternoon and

    "I'm catching up with yesterday."

Working on this BLOG is still a challenge. Let's see if I can learn how to use bold print and cursive. Hey, it worked!

That's enough effort for the last day of November, 2007. Oh, that reminds me:

Have you ever heard this little rhyme:

    "30 days has September
    April, June and November.
    All the rest have 31
    Except February which has
    28 and 1 more in every 4."

    See you in December. Wendy

    The "BOSS" was here

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band started their European tour in Madrid last night. They were all here except for Danny Federici who stayed in the States and was replaced on this tour by Charles Giordano who had worked with the band on their previous tour.

The 15,000 spectators, including King Juan Carlos' children were in attendance for the big night at the Palacio de los Deportes of the Madrid Community.

Springsteen and Co. had the floor vibrating. There is a reason he's called the BOSS. He makes things happen. He makes the audience move. His energy is contagious. During his performance he switched from one guitar to another, played the harmonica, and had the audience clapping and flinging their arms in the air.

He played his classics "Born to Run" and "Dancing in the Dark". He included songs from his album "Magic". He connected with his audience and they loved it.

Bruce's Spanish isn't great, but no one seemed to care. He sang in English, which a large number of those 15,000 people DON'T understand, but they understood his message! He's in his late 50's now, but he attracted a crowd of all ages. He communicated his enthusiasm and vitality and will for many years to come.

Springsteen's music, as that of many other musicians of our time, crosses oceans and cultural boundaries. Music unites us. Maybe it isn't necessary to learn English, or Spanish or Chinese for that matter. Music is really the international language. Don't you agree?

To speak or NOT to speak English! ---That is the question!

Do you recognize that quote? No, of course you don't because this is the first time you've ever seen it. I just wrote it. However someone very famous said something very similar. Who was it and what did he say?
    *************************
Yes, I speak English...and Spanish and some French, a bit of Portuguese and a word or two in German... Well, let's not mention German. I just don't try hard enough to get all those words in the right order. Where was I? Oh, yes. Let's get back to English.

What about you? Are you virtually monolingual, or do you try to understand other citizens of this world, and make yourself understood? Chinese, Arabic, Russian....

    You know....
If you speak Catalán you probably understand some French. Have you ever tried? If you speak Gallego, you understand a lot of Portuguese.Italian...no problem! And all those Erasmus students. Do you ever talk to them or try to understand what they are saying in their native languages?

If you get DVDs and WATCH THEM IN ENGLISH you are making an effort to learn that lovely language Shakespeare so enjoyed right in the comfort of your own home.

It's time for everyone in this world to learn another language, or two or three or four. And whether we like it or not, English is the "lingua franca" for the moment so why not start by reading this BLOG on a regular basis.

Yes, yes, I know Spanish is important, very important. Millions of people all over the world speak Spanish every day. And they are proud of it, just like you are.

Deciding to learn English doesn't make Spanish any less important! It just makes YOU more international. AND makes traveling and going to conferences and meeting foreigners MUCH more fun. It can even be fun to read a BLOG in English.

Answer me! I've never written a BLOG before.
    HELP ! Ayúdame. Wendy
