Do you see the glass half full or half empty? Are you a positive, optimistic and content person, or are you a bit negative, pessimistic and unhappy with your life. Do you look forward to things, or do you just worry about the future?
Here is an "explanation of LIFE" which has been circulating on internet recently. I thought you'd like to read it.-Wendy
LIFE
When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 glasses of wine...
A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.
He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.
The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar.. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.
The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous 'yes.' The professor then produced two glasses of wine from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.
'Now,' said the professor, as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things; your family, your children, your health, your friends, and your favorite passions; things that if everything else were lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.' The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, and your car. The sand is everything else; the small stuff.
'If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, 'There is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.' 'Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. Play another 18. Do one more run down the ski slope. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first; the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.' One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the wine represented.
The professor smiled. 'I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of glasses of wine.'

It's Sunday, January 6th, 2008. That may not have too much significance for those of you in America or Asia or Africa, or even elsewhere in Europe, but here in Spain, today is "Reyes" and that is VERY IMPORTANT. Last night the 3 kings arrived. They came from the East, bringing presents for all the good children in Spain.
*You English speakers know about the 3 kings from the song: "We 3 kings from Orient are,
bearing gifts we travel afar..."
There is a big parade in Madrid which is televised every year, but most families take their children to a local parade.
Traditionally Melchor, Gaspar & Baltazar come by camel, but now we see them more often on 3 large floats, waving to the children while their pages throw candy, confetti, and streamers. Not surprisingly, the shops are open till midnight so the evening of January 5th is very lively in Spain.
Eventually the children have to have dinner and go to bed or the Kings won't come. NO, NO, not so fast. First each Spanish child puts his/her shoes out in a prominent place, preferably newly polished or cleaned shoes, because that's where the kings will deposit the presents. Then they have to remember that the kings will be thirsty so they leave them 3 glasses of coñac. And the kings might be hungry too so they'll want to have some turrón (Spanish Christmas candy). Some children may have collected straw for the camels too.
***********************************
And then it's REYES morning and "lo & behold" the 3 kings came! There are presents for everyone! Well, maybe not for everyone because if YOU've been bad, YOU'll only get candy-COAL instead of the dolls & balls & video games & skiis you asked for.
On January 6th, Spanish families all share a "Roscón de Reyes", a donut shaped pastry with a charm hidden inside. No, YOU don't want to get the charm in your piece of Roscón, because if you do, YOU have to pay for the Roscón next year.
And then, FINALLY, after the holidays which in Spain encompass Christmas Eve & Christmas Day, New Year's Eve & recuperating on New Year's Day, "Reyes" Eve & "Reyes" Day we all settle down to a new year of work and study. Yes, the "Christmas" holidays last for 2 weeks in SPAIN.
What did YOU do over the holidays ? Wendy

Have you made any New Year's Resolutions?
It's already January 4th. Have you broken them yet?
Maybe it is a good idea NOT to tell your friends and family what your New Year's Resolutions are. Then when you break them, no one is going to chastise you!
What are your New Year's Resolutions this year? Are they the same ones as last year and the year before that?
Maybe you've decided to STOP SMOKING. That's a good one. Smoking is bad for your health. Maybe it bothers your friends and family. And it's expensive.
Just think. If you are a heavy smoker, a chain smoker, you probably smoke 2 packs a day. That's about 5 euros a day x 365. That's ....1,825 Euros you'll be spending this year on cigarettes. Absurd!
Wouldn't you be happy if you won 1,825 Euros in the lottery? Well, you don't even need to have a ticket for "El Niño". You've already won! You just need to convince yourself to stop smoking!
Other good New Year's Resolutions:
Learn English, study regularly and not just before exams, finish a project BEFORE it's due, share your time by helping others, volunteer, lose weight, spend more time with your mother, take your little brothers and sisters somewhere fun, ask your father for advice frequently, send an email to people who have helped you become the person you are today, finish your PhD, learn to use a new computer program and a big ETC.
Well, it's already January 4th, but it's never too late to start. And this is Spain so let's not worry about New Year's Resolutions. Let's make it After Epiphany (Después de Reyes) resolutions. That's it. On January 7th, we're all going to START to follow through with our New Year's Resolutions. Just one week late. That's not too bad. Wendy
