    Are YOU the center of the universe?

    Question: “What do you like to do in your free time?”
    Answer: “Go out with my friends”
    Question: “And what do you do with them?”
    Answer: “Drink beer!” Go to a "botellón". “Have Fun!”
    Oh, come on. There’s more to life than drinking and going out with your friends.” It's true that you have made a place for yourself at home, at school, at work, in the business world. You live in a comfortable microcosm. You're OK. You're not too worried about the world outside.
    You're pretty important to your friends, your family, your co-workers.
    You're really NUMBER 1, right?????? WRONG!
    Let’s take a little trip:

    Fantastic trip

    In the desert and on the computer screen!

    Last summer I went to Tucson, Arizona for a week. This is a desert area near the Mexican border. It was very hot during the day, so we went out walking a lot in the evening. There were a lot of beautiful cactus, but not many living creatures. We did see rabbits and quail and lizards and heard that there were snakes about. Eiuuuu! That worried us. Then….walking back towards our room...Oh....watch out! We saw not 1 but 2 tarantulas about 2 meters from our front door! It was dusk and these 2 were checking each other out! O.K. Keep calm! We are the intruders.
    Vocabulary:
    Border: division between countries; "frontera"
    Rabbits: rodents with long ears. Bugs bunny is a famous rabbit; “conejos”
    Quail: a bird that runs on the ground, usually with others; “cordoniz”
    Lizards: similar to a small crocodile; "lagartos"

    keep calm: don't get nervous; "tranquilízate"
    intruders: people that interrupt you or invade your space; "intrusos"

    Here is A GAME for you. There is a big spider/tarantula walking around Europe. You can drag it out of your country with your mouse. If you hit your space bar you can put little flies on the map. The spider will eat them, with or without your help! Oh, I love computer technology!
    Vocabulary:
    Drag: pull something ; “arrastrar”
    Mouse: instrument used to activate things on your computer screen; “ratón”
    Hit: touch with force; “tocar con gana; pegar”

    Designer of the Obama "O"

    YOU can create a high profile LOGO. Sol Sender did.

    Sol Sender, grandson of Spain’s famous writer Ramón J. Sender Garcés, and his team at Sender LLC in Chicago presented seven or eight design options for the OBAMA campaign logo. They were asked back for the second round, and within 2 weeks their now famous “O" for OBAMA was chosen. The rest, as we say, is history.
    Listen to Sol himself describe the process of creating the Obama "O"

It has been said Bill Gates once took this test and scored a 3 on it. I don't believe that because I got a 9 out of 11 and I'm definitely no Bill Gates. Let's see how well you do. Scroll down on the link to see the answers. I KNEW the answers to the 2 I missed. I just didn't THINK long enough. Have fun! and don't forget to THINK !

    MEN'S BRAINS vs WOMEN'S BRAINS

    Men's brains and women's brains don't work in the same way.

    YOU are trying to finish a project for school. You also have to get your mother a birthday present, take care of your little brothers and sisters in the afternoon and visit your grandmother on Sunday. You just finished telling your boyfriend all about it, and he answered by saying, “Let’s go to a movie tonight. And we could go to the mountains this weekend”. You’re furious. He wasn’t even listening to you.

    YOU are worried about your girlfriend. She wants to spend all her time with her family or at the library studying. You can’t believe it. You just asked her to go to a great movie tonight and suggested going skiing on the weekend. She just stormed out of the room yelling, “You never listen to me”.

    YOU just can’t understand your husband. You just got home from work after having gone to the supermarket. YOU put away the food, help the kids with their homework and start getting dinner ready. He comes home, says Hi, and gives everyone a kiss. YOU start to tell him about your day and the dozen things you need to do this week. After 2 minutes he leaves the room and turns on the computer. Grrr. He doesn’t care what you’re saying. He’s turning you off.

    YOU get home after a long hard day at work. The kids are screaming, your wife is running around the kitchen, and the dog won’t stop barking. You try to say something, but no one is paying any attention to you. You give up and decide to watch the news.

    Do any of these scenarios sound familiar?
    There is a good explanation for this difference between men and women.

    VOCABULARY from text above:
    worried: preocupado
    stormed out of: salió echando chispas
    yelling: gritando
    put away the food: guardar la compra
    get dinner ready: preparar la cena
    screaming: chillando
    give up: te rindes

    VOCABULARY from YOUTUBE presentation:
    Brain: cerebro
    Made up of little boxes: hecho de cajitas
    Discuss: hablar de
    Put away: guarder
    highway: autopista
    a big ball of wire: una bola de cables
    an event: un acontecimiento
    we don’t care: no nos importa
    we’re not aware of: no nos damos cuenta
    has a chance: tiene la oportunidad

    Snow at the UEM !

    The campus is beautiful! The lake is covered with snow! The trees and the benches, and... everything ! Lorenna Najera, a student from México saw snow for the first time here at the UEM on Friday. Mariluz & I happened to be on the bridge, taking pictures of this unusual event when she came out.

    It NEVER snows in Villaviciosa, but it sure snowed on Friday. The traffic was a mess and even the airport closed for a few hours. Some of us had trouble getting to the university and some didn't get here at all. Look at what you missed!
    Be sure you find time to watch the snowflakes fall. Wendy

  • SALES-----SHOPPING FOR YOURSELF

    SALES!
    The holiday shopping frenzy is over. We spent every cent we had on presents for our friends and relatives, and for ourselves. Come on, admit it. You DID buy things for yourself. How could you resist all the pre-Christmas sales this year? You just HAD TO have that sweater you saw at the mall. And a couple of CDs. And the boots which were marked down to ONLY 110 Euros! What! Are you kidding? What are you doing buying expensive things for yourself!
    Well, it’s January now and you have a little money from dear Uncle Pepe who thought you might like to shop for your own present this year. Yeah, Uncle Pepe! There is no hard road ahead “cuesta de enero” for you. You have a job, and new clothes that the 3 Kings brought you. And now you are heading for the electronics store so get an i-phone or an External Hard-drive with that money which is just burning a hole in your pocket. And while you’re there, you might as well check out some of the other stores. They’re all slashing their prices again and again, hoping to get all those shoppers in the door. Don’t succumb! You still need to have some beer money. And you want to see that new movie, and go skiing and ….and…and.
    Maybe you should cut back on the shopping. I mean it IS snowing outside and you may get stuck at the mall for hours!. It might be a good idea to give up the shopping for a day or two, stay home and STUDY for your midterms and finals.
    -Amen

    How long will you live? A longevity game

    How long will you live? Do you have any bad habits? Is your life style affecting your life expectancy? If your grandmother is 94 now and has no bad habits, she may live until she's 108 ! Her children may NOT outlive her! Now, that's scary!
    Click here:
    Longevity Test
    Watch the age prediction on the top right of the screen change as you answer the various questions. Change an answer and see just how much longer you'll live if, for example, you stop smoking!

    ADVICE:

    If you are accustomed to using the metric system:you think in METERS, you may need to use the chart I've included below in order to calculate your height (estatura) in feet and inches. If you think in KILOS, you should figure out your weight (peso) in pounds. Do this before you open the link.

    Measuring your height in FEET & INCHES and your weight in POUNDS
    1 foot = 12 inches
    1 meter = 100 cm = 39.5 inches = 3 feet 3.5 inches = 3’3.5”
    Example: Multiply your height in centimeters by 39.5 inches:
    1m 70= 1.70 cm x 39.5 = 67.2 inches = 5 feet 7 inches
    Figure out how tall you are/your height and ………………………….say:
    1m50cm = 59.3 inches = 4 feet 11.3 inches = 4’ 11.3”-------I’m 4-11
    1m60cm = 63.2 inches = 5 feet 3.2 inches == 5’3”-----------I’m 5-3
    1m 65cm= 65.2 inches = 5 feet ========= =5’0”-----I’m 5 feet tall
    1m70cm = 67.2 inches = 5 feet 7.2 inches= = 5’7”-----------I’m 5-7
    1m80cm = 71.1 inches= 5 feet 11.1 inches =5’11”-----------I’m 5-11
    2 meters= 79 inches = 6 feet 7 inches=== = 6’7” ----------I’m 6-7

    Measuring your weight in Pounds = lbs
    1 kilo= 2.2 pounds /lbs
    Example: Multiply your weight in kilos by 2.2 lbs ---65 kilos x 2.2 = 143 pounds/lbs

    50 kilos = 110 pounds/lbs
    60 kilos = 131 pounds
    75 kilos = 165 pounds
    80 kilos = 176 pounds
    85 kilos = 187 pounds
    100 kilos= 220 pounds

    Have fun!

  • New Year's Resolutions-2009

    Happy New Year.

    It's a NEW YEAR----a new start---and you need to make new resolutions. Or are you promising yourself the same things you did last year?

    For example:
    Are you going to stop smoking?
    Maybe you've promised to quit smoking.
    Why don't you give up smoking?

    *All three of these expressions mean "dejar de" in Spanish.
    stop smoking
    give up smoking
    quit smoking
    *You need to use the gerund, the ING ending!

    Have YOU made any New Year's resolutions?
    * Look at New Year's Resolutions January 4, 2008 in this blog.
