Donations for HAITI

We all know about the tragedy in HAITI: a major earthquake, tremors, aftershocks, another earthquake. Can you IMAGINE what it's like to be in HAITI right now?

The Haitian people need our help. Contribute! Donate a Euro; donate 50. Drop a few coins in the box as you come and go. It will all add up. And now UEM and Laureate International Universities havepromised to double our donations!

You'll see students in red VOLUNTEER vests collecting money in Building B today. There are collection boxes at the reception desk in each building.

IMAGINE what it would it be like if the ground in your hometown shook like that? Would the buildings collapse? Would your life change dramatically in a few minutes. Help the RED CROSS help the HAITIAN people. You are a citizen of the world. Do what you can do to help the cause.

Earthquake in HAITI: Contribute to the cause

Please help the people in HAITI who are suffering from a 7.0 magnitute earthquake and 5+ magnitude aftershocks. The UEM VOLUNTEERS have set up tables, MAIN HALL, BUILDING A to collect money for HAITI through the CRUZ ROJA, the Spanish Red Cross . This initiative came from the 3rd and 4th year LAW students. They will be manning tables from 9:00 to 14:00 all this week. We know that it is exam time and everyone is busy, however they need more volunteers to collect money. Marta Acosta Soria and Alvaro Calvo Giralt came to the UEM LAB to ask for our collaboration. We are sending volunteers to help with the tables and have set up a collection box in the reception area of the UEM LAB which will be available from 8:00-21:00 all this week. If you have an hour or two to spare, please come by the VOLUNTARIADO tables to sign up for a shift or contact 20610076@live.uem.es . Be sure to put VOLUNTEERING time for HAITI INITIATIVE on the subject line. Remember, being a volunteer is an important part of your university experience and is mandatory on your CV for a job search in the global job market.

Thank you for your collaboration. Wendy

A 3-day weekend! and then Thanksgiving, a 4-day weekend !

We have a 3-day weekend! There's a holiday this Monday. All holidays should be on Mondays. In fact, in the U.S. most holidays are celebrated on Mondays so that everyone who can, gets a 3-day weekend. We should do that in Spain!

And then there's Thanksgiving. That's a 4-day weekend! Yep, it's always a 4-day weekend, because Thanksgiving is the 4th Thursday in November so that everyone who wants to can get home for the weekend. The airports, train stations, bus depots and highways are crowded because Americans are all "going home" to see the family and have a Thanksgiving Feast.

All of you at the UEM campus are invited to our THANKSGIVING PIE TASTING FEAST. We can't put on a whole Thanksgiving dinner, but everyone is encouraged to try our APPLE PIE and PUMPKIN PIE and to contribute a home-made dessert. You could be the winner of the "Best Cook at the UEM" Award ! We'll cut all the desserts up into little pieces so that you can try a lot of them. If you don't contribute a dessert, you can try them anyway for 1 Euro.

All the money collected will go to the NGO: FUNDACIÓN RAIS, an "ONG" which helps the homeless in Madrid.

Hope to see you here in Building A on November 26th 13:30-15:30.

Wendy

Some of the dessert contributed in 2008

Grammar: 3-day weekend, 4-day weekend.

Notice that "day" is singular: There's no "s". This is because it is used as an adjective and adjectives in English are NEVER PLURAL.

Traffic on the bridge

There's always a lot of foot-traffic on the bridge at the UEM and this week was no exception. In fact, there were more people than usual. 18 NGOs, non-governmental volunteer organizations, set up their stands around campus and gave out information about volunteering on the bridge. UEM LAB Reporters were out there too, encouraging students and employees to register for English and handing out "I speak English" stickers. Lots of you stopped for a chat, in English, of course!

I speak English!
Mahou was there too. They were giving away free samples of their new Mixta, a low-alcohol content beer with lemon drink. It was thirst-quenching on a hot afternoon, and several students walked over the bridge again and again, collecting free bottles for an after-school party.

bridge = puente (long weekend = puente)

set up = montar

gave out = repartieron

volunteering = voluntariado

encouraging = animando

to register = matricularse

handing out = repartiendo

stickers = pegatinas

giving away = regalando

thirst-quenching = que acaba con la sed

walk over = cruzar

An inspiring book: "Three Cups of Tea"

"Three Cups of Tea" : One Man's Mission to Promote Peace...One School at a Time.

by Greg Mortenson & David Oliver Relin

This is an important book.......right now! It's an outsider's inside look at what schools mean to people who want to educate their children, especially their daughters, and can't. It shows first hand what Mortenson was willing to do to bring hope to isolated villages, in this case in Pakistan and Afganistan.

He found a need and found a way to fulfill that need, by building schools. Then he searched for collaborators and funds. And he's been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Read it.

New Year's Resolutions

Have you made any New Year's Resolutions?
It's already January 4th. Have you broken them yet?

Maybe it is a good idea NOT to tell your friends and family what your New Year's Resolutions are. Then when you break them, no one is going to chastise you!

What are your New Year's Resolutions this year? Are they the same ones as last year and the year before that?

Maybe you've decided to STOP SMOKING. That's a good one. Smoking is bad for your health. Maybe it bothers your friends and family. And it's expensive.
Just think. If you are a heavy smoker, a chain smoker,you probably smoke 2 packs a day. That's about 5 euros a day x 365. That's ....1,825 Euros you'll be spending this year on cigarettes. Absurd!
Wouldn't you be happy if you won 1,825 Euros in the lottery? Well, you don't even need to have a ticket for "El Niño". You've already won! You just need to convince yourself to stop smoking!

Other good New Year's Resolutions:
Learn English, study regularly and not just before exams, finish a project BEFORE it's due, share your time by helping others,volunteer,lose weight, spend more time with your mother, take your little brothers and sisters somewhere fun, ask your father for advice frequently, send an email to people who have helped you become the person you are today, finish your PhD, learn to use a new computer program and a big ETC.

Well, it's already January 4th, but it's never too late to start. And this is Spain so let's not worry about New Year's Resolutions. Let's make it After Epiphany (Después de Reyes) resolutions. That's it. On January 7th, we're all going to START to follow through with our New Year's Resolutions. Just one week late. That's not too bad. Wendy
