How good is your memory?

Do you remember people when you see them again? You may not remember their names, but do you remember if you've seen them before and when you saw them?
? ? ? ? ?
Try this test. You have to pay attention!1. Look at the faces and try to remember them.

2. Look at a 2nd group of faces and try to remember them.

3. Answer the questions:

  • Have you seen the faces before?
  • Were they in the first group or the second?

I was very surprised. I know that I'm terrible at remembering names and I assumed that I was just as bad at remembering faces. However I got a perfect score, 100% on the first part: recognizing faces, and 92% on the second part: when I'd seen them. Let's see how well you do.

Vocabulary:

Try: probar

Pay attention: prestar atención

try to: intentar

score: puntuación

Spelling: Is it really that important?

Ever since you were children your teachers have been telling you how important spelling is.

"SPELLING", "WATCH YOUR SPELLING". If your spelling was terrible, your English teacher may have called it "Creative Spelling." You learned to read and write and you learned to spell. In Spanish, for the most part, it was pretty easy.

You started with "Mi Mamá me mima mucho". You learned to spell your name: M-A-R-I-A or D-A-N-I-E-L . Maybe your name is J-O-A-Q-U-I-N or E-S-T-E-F-A-N-I-A so you had to concentrate more. Reading was easy too. Spelling wasn't too bad. Then you moved on to the grammar with "amo-amas-ama-amamos-amáis-aman" pretty quickly thereafter. That wasn't difficult except for the accents. "You forgot an accent. You have to repeat the exam! " "Ay !!!!!!!!! "Hubiéramos" has a silent "H" AND an accent! It's "esdrújula". You failed the exam! You also had to think about the"r"and the double r "rr", the "n" and the" ñ", the "y" and the double l, "ll", the " b" and the "v". Maybe Spanish wasn't so easy after all.

Now let's look at English. In the '50s students learned to read and spell by sight or by sounding out the words. "The" and "a" came right in with important vocabulary like "dog" and "cat" and verbs like "run". "See Spot (the dog) run! Run Spot Run" was one of the first . Then there were words with inverted letters like "saw" and "was". After straightening out a few of those, students were threatened by such goodies as "thru---through--thorough and thought and taught and bought. You really "ought" to work on your spelling.

Advice: Learn to spell correctly! Stop using text-messaging abbreviations in emails. Use a dictionary or ask a friend if you want to sound half-way intelligent. All the English teachers and Spanish teachers in the world are WATCHING YOU!

HOWEVER there has been a lot of research lately on spelling. I just received this one and would like you to try it. Were all those teachers right or not?

Are you intelligent or are you dumb?

You are probably a university student working on your degree. You're studying English, doing research for your projects, and getting ready for a semester or year abroad , maybe on the Erasmus program. Then you'll do a couple of internships so that you can get a feel for the different options available to you. You hope to get a good job, possibly in a multinational. You'll have great career opportunities because you're getting good grades and taking your studies seriously.

Some of you are already employed. You're working on an advanced degree: an MA or a PhD. You've found that you still need to improve your English because you want to travel to countries where Spanish is NOT spoken. You want to go to conventions overseas, and give presentations in English yourself.

You're a very intelligent person, but sometimes you like to test yourself. Sometimes you just like to have fun. Look at the vocabulary and then take the test at the bottom. It is very un-academic, but kind of fun. Try it ! Are you dumb?

Careful. There is one trick question.

Vocabulary:

your degree: your major, university studies: tu título de estudios/licenciatura etc

doing research: "hacer investigación"

abroad: to another country: "al extranjero"

internships: practical training on the job

get a feel: learn what something is like by doing it: aprender practicando

available: possible: "disponibles"

career opportunies: professional opportunities: " desarrollo profesional"

grades: "notas/calificaciones"

MA: Masters degree: "Un master oficial2

PhD: Doctorate: "doctorado"

improve: to get better: "mejorar"

trick question: Question that uses a play on words: "Pregunta con trampa"

try it: attempt to do it: "pruébalo"

dumb: stupid: "tonto"

I think you just learned or reviewed some vocabulary.
Now, try the test.

Think! Think ! Think! You KNOW the answers

Try this test. Think! There's no time limit.
Use logic ! Use math ! THINK !

How smart are you really ? This Test has been used for over 50 years and has pretty much done it with great accuracy. If you don't score high, remember, you can always improve. It has been said Bill Gates once took this test and scored a 3 on it. I don't believe that because I got a 9 out of 11 and I'm definitely no Bill Gates. Let's see how well you do. Scroll down on the link to see the answers. I KNEW the answers to the 2 I missed. I just didn't THINK long enough. Have fun! and don't forget to THINK !

Many times when you look at a word you can see other words inside it.
Sometimes this helps you to learn vocabulary or to spell words correctly.

Take 1 letter out of each word to form another word. For example:
