Numbers: Why are they written 1,2,3...?

When we were in school we learned to recite our numbers: "1,2,3...." Then we learned to write them down, and finally we learned to spell them. We also learned Roman numerals.

The question is: Why do the numbers look as they do? Watch this demonstation and you'll learn how the Arabic numbers were created. What is the logic behind the shapes? There must be a good reason a 2 looks like a 2, right? Well, it's simple and creative. And logical too. The numbers have lasted as they are, for the most part, for thousands of years.

Living in 2 countries, I've always had problems with the 1 and 7. You know that in Spain there is a line through the middle of the 7. That's the way the Arabic 7 was originally written. In the US our 7 looks like your 1. I had a big problem with my bank recently because I filled out a transfer form with the 7 written without the cross through it, and the teller typed in a 1 in place of the 7. We didn't discover the problem until he tried to send the transfer for the 3rd time, each time saying that the account didn't exist!

How smart are you really ? This Test has been used for over 50 years and has pretty much done it with great accuracy. If you don't score high, remember, you can always improve. MEN'S BRAINS vs WOMEN'S BRAINS

Men's brains and women's brains don't work in the same way.

YOU are trying to finish a project for school. You also have to get your mother a birthday present, take care of your little brothers and sisters in the afternoon and visit your grandmother on Sunday. You just finished telling your boyfriend all about it, and he answered by saying, “Let’s go to a movie tonight. And we could go to the mountains this weekend”. You’re furious. He wasn’t even listening to you.

YOU are worried about your girlfriend. She wants to spend all her time with her family or at the library studying. You can’t believe it. You just asked her to go to a great movie tonight and suggested going skiing on the weekend. She just stormed out of the room yelling, “You never listen to me”.

YOU just can’t understand your husband. You just got home from work after having gone to the supermarket. YOU put away the food, help the kids with their homework and start getting dinner ready. He comes home, says Hi, and gives everyone a kiss. YOU start to tell him about your day and the dozen things you need to do this week. After 2 minutes he leaves the room and turns on the computer. Grrr. He doesn’t care what you’re saying. He’s turning you off.

YOU get home after a long hard day at work. The kids are screaming, your wife is running around the kitchen, and the dog won’t stop barking. You try to say something, but no one is paying any attention to you. You give up and decide to watch the news.

Do any of these scenarios sound familiar?
There is a good explanation for this difference between men and women.

How good are you at remembering faces?

The test consists of three parts. You'll see 12 pictures in the first part. Take a break, and then see another 12 in the second part. Take another break.

Victoria sent this in. Try it. It's a BBC webpage to help you learn English. And it's fun! See if you can get all the punctuation right. Try the mental math and science too. Can you identify the parts of a flower? Are some of them the same in your language?

This is a great site for language learners. If there are children in your life, try it with them!

How old is your BRAIN ?

Do you remember everything you read?
Do you stare (mirar fijo) at the computer screen or your notes or a book and 5 minutes later have no idea of what you just read?

Maybe you are young and active and yet have the brain of an oldster.
Maybe you are older but are quicker than a person 1/2 your age.

You may be surprised by the results of this test. I was.
I'm probably much older than you, but according to this test my BRAIN is only 23 years old! Right !!!!
